Last week I was very publically tested. Not in a spiritual way at all – my blood was tested. I was roped into getting my finger pricked for an HIV test in front of a group of visiting government officials who were on a tour of Living Hope. Not only did they watch my finger get pricked, but they also wanted to see the test, so under the scrutiny of a big official my blood was dropped into a test along with a fluid that would separate out the antibodies, if there were any. Then we watched to see how many lines appeared on the test. Now some tests have me sweating as I don’t know if I will pass or not, and I really hate public failure, but this test held no fear for me as I already knew my HIV status from donating blood so the outcome was not a surprise.
The test got me thinking though about being tested in public. Often if we do an exam or something the results are given to us privately. Your HIV test results are confidential and cannot be shared without your consent. Yet the Bible says that we will be tested.
1 Corinthians 3:12-15 If any man builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 his work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each man’s work. 14 If what he has built survives, he will receive his reward. 15 If it is burned up, he will suffer loss; he himself will be saved, but only as one escaping through the flames.
Am I ready to have my life tested publicly? What is my foundation – will it stand up to the test of fire? We will face testing times in our lives – unfortunately it is a promise that we find in the bible, there is no way to avoid it.
Revelation 2:10 Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Our response in times of testing is a public witness to those who are watching for our reaction and response. Thank fully when we do go through periods of testing we do not go through it on our own, our in our own strength.
Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.
Are you ready for your test?
