This morning on my way to work I had a treat. It was cold and still dark (yes Cape Town does get cold & dark) and as I sat in traffic I say ahead of me a bin lorry. In the back of the bin lorry were about 5 bin men and all of them where dancing! I couldn’t hear if they had a radio or if they were dancing without music, but in the chill of the morning in the middle of bin lorry they danced.
The dancing bin men were a reminder to me that attitude has so much to do with how we respond to our circumstances. Yes sometime our situation is harsh and smelly, sometimes we feel like we have been thrown on the rubbish heap. But these guys this morning chose to find joy in the midst of the rubbish.
James says we have a choice in how we respond to our circumstances:
James 4:9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom.
If we don’t like our circumstances we have a choice – to sit and be miserable or to rejoice. How can we find joy in the rubbish heap? The only way I know is by keeping our focus not of our current circumstance but upon God.
Romans 5:1-5 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
Are you disappointed with your circumstances? Rejoice in the One who holds everything in his hands. Yes rejoicing will not turn a rubbish heap into a place but it will certainly make your day more bearable. What will you choose to do in your rubbish heap? Will you dance with me?
